I can’t believe he’s three already. I’m still waiting for it to become real that he actually grew inside of me – as a result of two data points meeting in the right environment, – came out, and now walks and talks.

I never had a birthday at school before, being a summer baby. Walter gets the best of both worlds: summer birthday and a special day at school! So his Nini made yellow cupcakes for him to share with his friends. Of course, he didn’t want one. He just wanted to go home once he saw Nini show up at school!

Well, at least we sent the rest of the kids home with a sugar rush.

Then this weekend we threw a water party!

There is nothing better than seeing him have a really good time. He told me when it was over, “But I just want the party to stay!”

Warms my heart to see this. I love all of Walt’s little friends and their curiosity and joy for life.

While we were cleaning up our party, our new neighbors, who are apparently very well-known in the Ormewood Park community, invited us to a housewarming party they were throwing later in the day. We decided to stop by after nap time to introduce ourselves. Well, it was a true back yard affair! I got the green monster in my eyes a little bit after seeing their yard. Two decks, an amazing view, and enough green space to have the biggest water slide I’ve seen outside a water park. Walter convinced his daddy to take him up there two times. I’m glad I didn’t have to fight the crowd to go with him cause we saw one kid making his way back up the hill with a bloody nose! We ended up staying longer than we had anticipated (surprise surprise) because we found several friends there, including two of Walt’s preschool teachers from last year. I love when the world is small like that.

The Party

7 Mar

Last Sunday we went to an old friend’s wedding kick-off event. It was a small group of really cool people our age, hosted by a really cool group of adults our parents’ age that all live in Ansley Park. We hired a babysitter for the night, a very sweet girl who lives literally across the street from us. This was the second time Walter has had a paid babysitter (besides preschool), and I have to say, it makes me feel like a grown up. Even though I haven’t babysat since Walter was born, it is an weird feeling to pay someone to do what you used to do for money.

Being around lots of other happy couples (mostly other couples had been invited) made me terribly glad that David has loved me so long. 6 1/2 years so far. It is incredibly powerful to know that someone has chosen to love you through thick and thin, no matter what, and then live up to that challenge. He’s from the hill people of Scotland. He sticks around and puts up a fight.

My only other relationship that has lasted longer than with my husband — besides with my parents and siblings and a few school friends — is with my cell phone number. I’m pretty sure I could make a legal case if someone tried to take that number from me. You’ve been able to reach me at that number since I was 16 — when I got my first cell phone. Man was that thing a giant, and all it did was call and text. I miss that.

For a while we had a second phone line growing up. It ran into the guest bedroom and was somewhat my dad’s number, but we all used it. One night as we were eating dinner, we let the machine pick up, and we heard “Hello, hello, are you there?” in what we thought was my late grandmother’s voice. Caller ID: unknown number.

I was chatting with a new friend at the party, and he was talking about how he had known his girlfriend since they were ten, but they just recently started dating. But the best part for him was that since they had known each other for so long, they didn’t have to get past the “representative”. He said something like, “That’s the worst part of dating. For the first couple months you meet someone’s representative, and then you finally get to know them.” And while I instantaneously thought that was true, I also realized that I think that’s what I’ve been doing for myself lately. Getting rid of my own representative. It’s as if a filter is shedding, and I am becoming free.

Polaroids rock. So does this group of awesomeness. These guys have been friends since they were Walter’s age. And they have great arm candy now too.

And speaking of people that are awesome, have I mentioned lately how much I love Walter? Every day is an brand new experience of love like I never thought it could be. He’s absolutely my favorite person in all the world.

And they lived happily ever after

5 Jan

A couple months ago we had the pleasure of celebrating my in-laws 40th wedding anniversary. They are truly an inspiration for all married couples out there. They are happy and they work hard and spend their time traveling around the world. It seems like nothing will stop them on their adventures! I was able to participate in the most fun ways I know… graphic design and scrapbooking. Jan and I made a photo guestbook for the party at Piedmont Driving Club (in the same room where Dave and I had our rehearsal dinner!). Jan gathered the pictures, organized them by year, and labeled them. I spent about 24 hours straight, only stopping to eat and sleep, making the book because there was a Shutterfly coupon expiring the next day and the party was only about 3 weeks away at that point. So time was of the essence. It turned out beautifully, and so many people signed it, it was wonderful. It is truly a treasure to look through.

The cute little sign I made.

wine labels for 40th I also made personalized wine label stickers, since everyone likes getting wine and this adds an intimate touch to an easy gift. That’s them on their honeymoon trip to Jamaica. So cute!

Before the 40th anniversary party at PDC Walter looked handsome.

It was a great weekend spent with family and friends. Thank you to my in-laws for being such generous, kind-hearted people!
